What Is LOLER
LOLER, or Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998, is a law that aims to improve the safety of people using lifting equipment in the workplace. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforces the regulations, which apply to people and companies that: Own or operate lifting equipment, Provide lifting equipment for others to use, and Control how lifting equipment is used.
What are LOLER regulations?
LOLER requires that lifting equipment is strong and stable enough for it’s intended use and that it is marked with it’s maximum load. Again, this is also a requirement of the British and European Hoist standard, BS EN 10535.
What is the legal requirement for lift inspections?
Duty holders are responsible for ensuring lifts are examined at statutory intervals. LOLER inspections must be carried out every 6 months for passenger lifts or 12 months for goods lifts) to ensure they are safe to use. Lifts and hoists used to lift people or loads must be examined by a ‘competent person’.
